It’s amazing how often this question is asked on fashion blogs or in the news, but then nothing ever comes of it. This article is from 2022 and I think we know the answer to the question. Of course, that doesn’t mean we should give up though!
Are male skirts about to be the next fashion essential?
As Brad Pitt and a UK binman ditch their trousers to appreciate the breeze, we speak to a fashion expert on the skirt revolution.

Unfortunately, mens fashion changes very slowly so I wouldn’t expect skirts to be the next fashion essential for men just yet. The kilt is a recognised masculine wrap around skirt, yet a lot of men still wouldn’t wear one because it looks skirt like. To hasten skirts being mainstream for men, I think you would have to “unisex” them somehow like we have done with jeans, and promote the concept that men can wear skirts without having to masquerade as women, then I believe there may be a chance that a lot more men will try out a skirt.
I disagree. Men want to be men. They don’t want to go unisex and I think many men don’t want to be androgynous. Not that there’s anything wrong with either. But most men like being men.
I feel the best way to get men to wear a skirt is to call it a kilt (cause most men’s egos are too fragile to call it a skirt), highlight the comfort (makes room for the boys if you got boys that need room) and definitely make associations with the real men who are Scottish highlanders. Follow it up with a “oorah” (US marine battle cry of enthusiasm) in the commercials.
Once men feel comfortable wearing a kilt, a manly kilt that is, they’ll understand what all of us know. Skirts are just too comfortable for men to go back.
Just never call it a skirt.
I’m good with never worrying about the semantics. But then again, I drank the Kool Aid.
