This is a really great, in-depth article about men wearing gender-non-conforming clothing. It’s from 2021, so it’s a few years old by now, but it’s still highly relevant today and worth the read. We need more like this!
Men in Dresses: Why It Works and How to Dress Well – Cottonable
Harry Styles’ 2020 Vogue cover raised a question: are men in dresses a thing now? There are dresses for men that you can rock, too!

I found that article to have been quite interesting. Men should be able to wear what they want, even if it’s from the women’s side of the store, I wear dresses myself and find it to be very liberating, not to mention a lot of fun as well.
I fully agree!
I should know better but I have this thought that men will never be accepted wearing dresses.
This comes because when I first got into wearing tights as a child, I remember thinking boys will never wear tights and not be mercilessly ridiculed. Cue a few years and voila, NBA guys are wearing tights and the kids are aping them. And this “kid” wears them now openly and gets only good natured banter from his friends.
Then I got into skirts. And I thought there is no way a man will wear a skirt and not be mercilessly mocked. But now I wear them (kilts and some skirts) and instead of ridicule, I get compliments.
So dresses. In my myopic mind, I can’t see a man wearing a dress and being accepted.
But I’ve been wrong twice before and here’s hoping the third time ain’t the charm
I’ve also had that thought and also had similar experiences to those you describe. The vast majority of the population just accepts it when a man wears tights, skirts or dresses. If asked, they probably would say no, they shouldn’t wear those things, but if they see a man simply doing it, they generally don’t have a problem with it. Seeing it makes it real which is easier for people to accept than something more abstract like the theory of a man in a dress.
Does it really matter if men in dresses are accepted? That doesn’t matter a bit to me, I simply wear what I like, and have fun in the process.
It’s probably one of the most positive, uplifting articles on this matter, throwing history of men’s clothing, modern activists and problems some people have with dresses on males. I have been experimenting a bit with the dresses and I feel like I had more confidence once I picked something additional above the belt to cover the arms and belly so that it looks more like a jumper + pleated skirt than dress to whoever might look at it.
It’s definitely a positive article. I’m glad you’ve gotten into dresses! I still haven’t found any that fit me very well due to my very broad shoulders…
