One reason I like skirts is their clean lines, without the crotch wrinkles that affect every kind of pants (ok except yoga tights or baggies, each of which present their own issues). The added polish of the skirt goes well with a tucked top in a way that hanging out loses, IMHO. Also, despite my mild superannuation, I still have a waist and like to see it and show that it’s there: something that’s lost (or hidden on purpose) in most shirt-out options. Oh, and I have a collection of fine belts and buckles that add a bit of further interest to the outfit (and draw many compliments). Yes, it’s tucked in for me.
It certainly makes sense to show off your waist and belts! I don’t always tuck in my shirts because it seems like a lot of them that I have bunch up underneath the skirt (or pants) which causes an unwanted bulge directly below the belt. Have you ever had that issue?
Alex, I have not had the shirttail bunching problem (or anyway no one has mentioned it and I haven’t noticed it). But I do have some tops that like to escape a bit after sitting, so they flip over the belt in back or sides rather than being straight on in for the sharpest look. A bit of re-tuck fixes that of course but it’s nice to avoid. That said, I find higher-waist skirts minimize this and look better on me too (longer leg look).
I also have tops that escape after sitting. Some of my shirts are just too short to be tucked in really even if they aren’t especially short. The others just tend to bunch up for me. Maybe I just have the wrong body shape for tucking in shirts? Although I don’t know if that would really play a role.
I tuck my shirt (whether longsleeve or ‘boring’ T-shirt) into the skirt probably because I do the same while wearing some “official” outfit like suit + I was doing it with plain clothes before I started wearing skirts. I probably feel more comfortable about my health when I see my waist still being in quite a good shape. Finally, as I often wear pencil skirts, I think tucking shirt is the most sensible thing to do with it.
Those are all good reasons for tucking in your shirt!
Depends on the skirt and the look you are trying to create for your overall outfit…. If in doubt, just have a look at some general images online for some inspiration on if you want to tuck your top in your skirt or not, you can create multiple looks either way 🩷
It depends on the shirt I’m wearing, not so much the skirt.
If I’m wearing a buttoned shirt and the skirt has belt loops, which most of mine do, then tucked in, combined with a belt so as to draw in my somewhat paunchy middle, making it appear less wide than my shoulders. If wearing a t-shirt or the skirt lacks belt loops then untucked.
I prefer belt + tucked in as presenting a better contrast between top and bottom.
